JAM INDUSTRIES PROFILED IN 'THE MUSIC TRADES' MAGAZINE JAM INDUSTRIES OF CANADA: Setting the Pace North of the Border How Marty Golden and Eddy
Shenker built Montreal-based JAM Industries into one of the world’s finest distribution organizations.
When he was managing his family’s music store in Montreal in the ’60s, all Marty Golden ever remembers hearing from his suppliers was “Buy more product or we’ll take the line away.” Street-smart and tough, he wasn’t one to be bullied by sales reps. But in the midst of the regular table-pounding confrontations, he often thought, “If these suppliers ever offered me some real help instead of just heavy-handed threats they’d get a lot more business.” A few years later in 1972, when he founded JAM Industries, he decided to see if retailers really would respond to a more collaborative approach. Criss-crossing Canada in a station wagon packed full of Crumar keyboards and Giannini guitars, he resolved to make a different kind of sales presentation. Instead of just cajoling retailers to buy, he offered them sound advice on how to promote, honest inventory appraisals, as well as training on how to make more compelling product presentations. In a very short time he found himself with a lot more business than he ever thought possible. Thirtythree years later his initial commitment to service has remained unchanged, and JAM Industries has evolved from a oneman operation into a vibrant $116-million (sales) distribution powerhouse with a commanding share of the Canadian market.
